What to Do With Your Pet's Photos After They Pass

Hundreds of photos on your phone and no idea what to do with them. Gentle, practical ideas for turning a pet's photos into something lasting.

After a pet dies, the photos are everywhere - hundreds of them, scattered across your phone, half-forgotten in cloud folders, surfacing without warning when you're scrolling for something else. They're precious and painful in equal measure, and most people have no idea what to actually do with them. Here are gentle, practical ideas.

First, gather them in one place

The scattered photos are part of what makes them hard. Spend a quiet evening collecting your favourites into a single album or folder. This sounds small, but it's the step that turns "photos I stumble across and ache" into "a collection I can choose to visit." Pick perhaps twenty or thirty that really capture them.

Choose the one

Out of all of them, there's usually one photo that is them - the expression, the pose, the look that sums up their whole character. That's the image worth turning into something you'll keep forever.

Turn the best one into a portrait

A phone is where photos go to be forgotten. A wall is where they're remembered. A memorial portrait takes that one perfect photo and hand-finishes it into a piece you'll be glad to see every day - warm and characterful rather than a painful snapshot. Many people find a soft watercolour or gentle oil treatment suits remembrance better than a stark photographic copy.

Other gentle things to do with the rest

  • A small printed photo book - the doing of it is as healing as the having.
  • A single framed print for a bedside or shelf.
  • A shared album sent to the family who loved them too, so the remembering isn't only yours.

There's no rush, and no wrong way

Some people act within days; others aren't ready for months. Grief doesn't run to a schedule. The photos will keep. When you're ready to turn the best of them into something lasting, a hand-finished memorial portrait is one of the gentlest ways to do it - delivered as a high-resolution file you can keep, print, and share wherever you are in the world.
